Natural pool flocculant is a clarifying treatment of plant or mineral origin that groups suspended particles—dust, fine turbidity, dead algae remains—into clumps that settle at the bottom and can be easily vacuumed. Unlike conventional chemical flocculants based on aluminum sulfate, natural flocculants are biodegradable, do not alter pH, and are safe for people with sensitive skin. They are applied in both private pools and natural pools, and ecological filtration systems.
What is natural pool flocculant and how does it work?
Natural flocculant works through a coagulation-flocculation process: its active molecules bind to negatively charged microparticles floating in the water (clay, dust, organic waste) and clump them into heavier "flocs" that fall to the bottom. Once settled, they are vacuumed directly to the drain without passing through the filter.
The most commonly used natural flocculants in pools are based on chitosan (derived from crustaceans), modified corn starch, or vegetable tannins. All of them are free of heavy metals and are compatible with most common purification systems.

When do you need to apply natural flocculant in your pool?
- Cloudy or milky water that doesn't clear after 48 hours of continuous filtration
- After a storm that has carried dirt, dust, or sand into the pool
- After a shock treatment with algaecide to remove suspended dead algae remains
- When opening the pool each season, especially if the water has been stagnant for months
- Green or yellowish water due to algae proliferation (after treatment, not before)
- When the sand filter loses efficiency and cannot clear the water on its own
- Pools with high occupancy in summer, where sunscreen and sweat contribute to rapid turbidity
How to apply natural flocculant step-by-step
- Check the pH: It should be between 7.0 and 7.4. Outside this range, the flocculant loses up to 60% effectiveness. Adjust with a pH increaser or decreaser if necessary.
- Calculate the dose: Use our dose calculator to find the exact amount based on your pool's volume in m³ (do not overdose, it doesn't increase effectiveness).
- Dilute the product: Pour the dose into a bucket with pool water. Mix well before adding it to the pool.
- Distribute around the perimeter: With the filtration system on, slowly and evenly pour the mixture around the entire edge of the pool.
- Set the filter to recirculation mode: Change the valve from filter to recirculation for 2–4 hours so that the flocculant is distributed without being sucked into the filter.
- Let it rest for 8 to 12 hours: Ideally overnight, without swimming. This is when the floc settles at the bottom, forming a uniform layer.
- Vacuum the bottom: The next day, carefully vacuum by moving the vacuum head over the entire bottom surface. Set the valve to the "drain / waste" position to expel the floc directly and not recirculate it to the filter.
- Final backwash: Perform a complete backwash of the sand filter after vacuuming to remove any residue.
- Check the water: Measure pH, chlorine, and alkalinity again. In most cases, there will be no significant variations.
Natural flocculant dosage: how much you need according to your pool's volume
The standard dose of natural flocculant is 20 ml per 10 m³ of water for pools with moderate turbidity. For intense turbidity, up to 40 ml per 10 m³ can be used. Always consult the product label you purchased, as concentration may vary between formulas.
| Pool volume | Maintenance dose | Intense turbidity dose |
|---|---|---|
| 20 m³ (small pool) | 40 ml | 80 ml |
| 32 m³ (medium pool) | 64 ml | 128 ml |
| 50 m³ | 100 ml | 200 ml |
| 64 m³ (large pool) | 128 ml | 256 ml |
| 80 m³ | 160 ml | 320 ml |
