Puerto Verde's liquid pH- reducer for pools and spas is a ready-to-use product that quickly and effectively lowers the water's pH when it rises above the optimal range. As a liquid, it can be diluted and applied without waiting for it to dissolve, making it especially convenient for quick corrections. Maintaining the pH between 7.2 and 7.6 is essential for chlorine to work effectively, to prevent skin and eye irritation, and to protect the pool's lining and equipment.

What is the liquid pH- reducer and what is it used for?

Pool water pH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14. A pH of 7.0 is neutral; below that it is acidic, and above that it is alkaline. The optimal range for pool use is between 7.2 and 7.6. When the pH rises above 7.6, the water becomes too alkaline, which drastically reduces chlorine's disinfecting effectiveness, promotes scale formation, and can leave the water cloudy.

The liquid pH- reducer neutralizes this excess alkalinity and quickly returns the water to the correct range. Since it comes in liquid form, it does not need to be dissolved beforehand: simply dilute it in a bucket of water and pour it directly around the perimeter of the pool.

When do you need to lower your pool's pH?

  • The pH test shows more than 7.6 using test strips or a photometer
  • The chlorine loses effectiveness even though you dose it normally
  • The water has a cloudy or milky appearance for no apparent reason
  • Limescale deposits appear on the walls, waterline, or equipment
  • After using too much pH+ or alkalinity increaser
  • After filling with new water from the mains, which is usually alkaline
  • If you have gone more than a week without checking the water's pH

How to apply the liquid pH- reducer step by step

⚠ Before you start: Apply the product when no one is swimming and the recirculation system is running. Do not mix the pH- reducer with other products in the same bucket or pour it into the water at the same time as chlorine or other correctors.
  1. Measure the current pH: Use test strips, a liquid test kit, or a digital photometer to find out how much you need to lower it.
  2. Calculate the dose: As a reference, 200 ml for every 10 m³ of water lowers the pH by 0.2 units (or an equivalent proportion). Use the pH and alkalinity calculator to get the exact ml according to your pool's volume.
  3. Dilute the product: Pour the required dose into a bucket with water and stir to dilute the solution thoroughly.
  4. Apply with the pump running: With the recirculation system running and no one swimming in the water, pour the diluted solution around the entire perimeter of the pool.
  5. Leave to work: Wait between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the size of the pool, for the product to distribute evenly.
  6. Measure the pH again: Check the new value. If the desired level has not yet been reached, repeat the process until it is.
💡 Pro tip: If the pH rises constantly in just a few days, check the water's total alkalinity (TA): a very high TA acts as a "buffer" and causes the pH to tend to rise again after each correction. Adjusting the alkalinity first makes it easier to keep the pH stable afterward.

Approximate dosage of liquid pH- reducer by volume and required reduction

The indicated dosages are approximate for lowering the pH by approximately 0.2 units (200 ml for every 10 m³). For larger reductions, calculate by multiplying or use the calculator.

Pool volume 0.2 unit reduction 0.5 unit reduction 1.0 unit reduction
20 m³ 400 ml 1,000 ml 2,000 ml
32 m³ 640 ml 1,600 ml 3,200 ml
50 m³ 1,000 ml 2,500 ml 5,000 ml
64 m³ 1,280 ml 3,200 ml 6,400 ml
80 m³ 1,600 ml 4,000 ml 8,000 ml

Actual values may vary depending on total alkalinity, temperature, and water hardness. Always use the pH and alkalinity calculator for greater precision.

Frequently asked questions about the liquid pH- reducer

How long does it take to lower the pH after applying it?
According to the directions for use, leave the product to work for between 2 and 4 hours with the recirculation system running, depending on the size of the pool. Then, check the new pH value and repeat the process if necessary until the desired level is achieved.
Can I swim while the pH- reducer is being applied?
No. The product must always be applied when no one is swimming, pouring the solution around the perimeter with the recirculation running. Wait for the indicated working time to pass and for the pH to be between 7.2–7.6 before swimming again.
What is the difference between the liquid pH- reducer and the pH+ increaser?
They are products with opposite effects: the pH- reducer lowers the pH when it is above 7.6, while the pH+ increaser raises it when it is below 7.2. They are never used at the same time: first measure the pH and apply only the one that corresponds to the result.
Can I mix the pH- reducer with other products?
No. Never mix the pH- reducer with other chemical products, including chlorine, in the same bucket or at the same time. Apply each product separately and wait at least 30 minutes between one and the other to avoid unwanted reactions.
What happens if I overdose and the pH drops too low?
A pH below 7.0 can irritate the skin and eyes, damage the lining, and corrode equipment. If you have overdosed, correct it by raising the pH again with our pH+ increaser, following its recommended dose according to your pool's volume.
How often should the pH be checked?
During the swimming season, measure the pH at least 2–3 times a week, and always before adding chlorine or other products. The pH tends to rise with the addition of new water, the use of certain alkalinity correctors, and the activity of swimmers themselves.
Where can I buy the liquid pH- reducer online in Spain?
You can buy the liquid pH- reducer, along with the rest of Puerto Verde's pool maintenance products, directly in this collection or in our official Amazon store.
