Puerto Verde cane molasses is a natural sugarcane byproduct, rich in potassium, organic carbon, and easily assimilated sugars. It is used in organic farming to activate soil microbial life and as a key ingredient in biofertilizers, manures, and fermented preparations, naturally enhancing growth, flowering, and crop quality.

What is cane molasses and how is it used in agriculture?

Cane molasses is a thick, dark liquid obtained during the extraction of sugar from sugarcane. It contains a high concentration of sugars, minerals (especially potassium), and organic compounds, making it an excellent energy source for beneficial soil microorganisms.

In organic farming, it is mainly used to activate and multiply microorganisms in biofertilizers and manures, speed up fermentation and composting processes, and provide energy that improves soil biological activity. Many farmers also use it diluted in foliar applications to improve the Brix level (sugar content) of fruits and vegetables.

When should you use cane molasses on your crops?

  • To activate and feed microorganisms in homemade biofertilizers and manures
  • To speed up composting by providing quick energy to the compost microbiology
  • To improve the Brix level of fruits and vegetables in diluted foliar applications
  • To enhance soil life in organic and regenerative agriculture
  • To prepare fermented products and plant extracts that need a sugar source
  • To promote flowering and fruit filling during the final stage of crop growth

How to use cane molasses step by step

  1. As a biofertilizer activator: add the molasses with the other ingredients of the preparation (manure, plant waste, water) to feed the microorganisms during fermentation.
  2. Dilute before applying: for irrigation or foliar spraying, always dilute the molasses in water before use; never apply it undiluted to the crop.
  3. Apply during hours with less sun: for foliar application, apply early in the morning or at dusk to prevent sunburn from the sugar solution.
  4. Repeat according to the process: for biofertilizers and compost, follow the proportions of your usual recipe; for foliar application, repeat every 1–2 weeks during flowering and fruit development.

⚠ Before applying: Always dilute it in water before use; applied undiluted, it can attract ants and other insects due to its high sugar content. Keep the container tightly closed in a cool place away from direct sunlight to prevent premature fermentation.

Frequently asked questions about cane molasses

How does cane molasses differ from an NPK fertilizer?
An NPK fertilizer provides mineral nutrients directly to the plant. Cane molasses is not a mineral fertilizer: it is an energy source (sugars and organic carbon) that feeds soil and biofertilizer microorganisms, indirectly improving plant nutrition through more active microbiology.
How is cane molasses diluted?
The ratio depends on the use: in biofertilizers and manures, add it according to the recipe you are following, and in foliar or irrigation applications, dilute it in a low ratio in water; never apply it undiluted. See the recommended ratios on our agriculture and garden blog.
Is it compatible with drip irrigation?
Yes, as long as it is well diluted and filtered to prevent emitter blockages, since it is a thick liquid. It is recommended to dilute it first in a separate container before adding it to the irrigation system.
What size should I choose?
It depends on the area and frequency of use: the 28 kg or 14 kg jug is designed for farms and estates with regular use, the 7 kg jug for family gardens, and the 1 kg container is ideal for urban gardens, potted plants, or testing the product before buying a larger size.
Can I combine it with magnesium sulfate or Agro pH Reducer?
Yes, they complement each other well within an organic crop management system: the Agro pH Reducer adjusts the irrigation water, magnesium sulfate corrects nutritional deficiencies, and cane molasses enhances soil microbial activity. It is recommended not to mix them directly in undiluted concentrate.
