In the garden
What to use sugarcane molasses for in the home garden
Raised beds with more life
Applied diluted in the irrigation, it provides sugars to the soil's microbial flora, which is responsible for converting organic matter into humus.
Base for ferments
It is the sweet ingredient in many homemade preparations: compost tea, bokashi or forest microorganism activation.
Composter in action
It helps the compost get started when the pile gets cold or with excess dry waste such as leaves and straw.
Garden fruit trees
An occasional addition to the tree well complements the fertilization of home lemon trees, fig trees or pear trees.
Garden recipes
Three homemade preparations with sugarcane molasses
Compost + water + molasses
Leave a handful of mature compost in water with a little molasses to oxygenate for one or two days and then strain and apply to the irrigation.
Fermented bran
Diluted molasses moistens the bran along with the microorganisms; after fermenting in a closed container, it is used to pre-compost kitchen scraps.
Dormant compost
A watering with diluted molasses over a compost pile that is not heating up helps reactivate the fermentation.
The amount of molasses for each preparation depends on the recipe and the volume. As a starting reference, always follow the instructions on the label.
