Puerto Verde citric acid is a natural descaler that removes limescale from taps, appliances, and household surfaces without resorting to harsh chemicals. Available as a powder and a ready-to-use liquid, it is one of our star products: concentrated, biodegradable, and highly versatile, for both routine home maintenance and deeper descaling.

What is citric acid and what is it used for?

Citric acid is a natural acid of plant origin, highly effective at dissolving limescale and mineral deposits that build up with hard water. Unlike conventional descalers, it is biodegradable and leaves no toxic residues, while being just as effective for everyday household tasks.

It is used to descale washing machines, dishwashers, coffee makers, and kettles, remove limescale from taps, shower screens, and tiles, and as a base for homemade multi-purpose cleaners. You can find a complete guide to its uses, with step-by-step proportions and tips, on our citric acid uses page.

Two formats, the same result

🧂

Citric acid powder

Concentrated format, ideal for diluting to your own proportions and preparing your own cleaning mixtures. More economical per use and perfect for large quantities or for those who already have their own dilution routine.

💧

Liquid citric acid

Ready to use, with no need to dissolve it or measure proportions. Convenient for quick, targeted applications, such as spraying directly onto limescale or adding it to the washing machine drawer.

When should you use citric acid at home?

  • To descale the washing machine and keep heating elements free of limescale
  • To remove limescale from taps, shower screens, and tiles in the bathroom and kitchen
  • To descale coffee makers and kettles with visible limescale deposits
  • To keep the dishwasher free of residue and improve its performance
  • To prepare a homemade descaling multi-purpose cleaner
  • To brighten surfaces dulled by hard water limescale

Citric acid powder vs liquid: which should you choose?

Feature Powder Liquid
Preparation Requires dissolving in water ✓ Ready to use
Convenience for occasional use Medium ✓ High
Yield per quantity ✓ Highly concentrated Concentrated, already diluted
Ideal for Preparing your own mixtures and large volumes Quick applications, direct spraying
Shelf life ✓ Very long in dry powder Long, keep tightly closed

Both formats are equally effective against limescale: the choice depends on how you use it, not its potency.

How to use citric acid step by step

  1. With the powder format: dissolve the recommended amount in hot water until completely dissolved, and apply the solution to the surface or appliance to be descaled.
  2. With the liquid format: apply it directly to the area with limescale, or add it to the washing machine drawer or appliance reservoir as appropriate, with no need to dilute.
  3. Leave to work: depending on the amount of limescale accumulated, leave the product to work for 15 to 30 minutes to properly dissolve mineral deposits.
  4. Rinse with water: remove residue with a cloth or sponge and rinse the surface thoroughly or run a rinse cycle on the appliance.

You will find exact doses and recipes for each appliance and surface in the complete guide to citric acid uses and on our natural products blog.

⚠ Before using it: Never mix citric acid with bleach, chlorine, or products containing them: the reaction produces toxic gases. Use gloves if you have sensitive skin, ventilate the room during use, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions about citric acid

What is the difference between citric acid powder and liquid?
Both formats have the same descaling power against limescale. The difference is in convenience of use: the powder must be dissolved in water before applying, making it more economical for large quantities and homemade mixtures, while the liquid comes ready to use, ideal for quick, targeted applications.
Which should I buy, the powder or the liquid?
If you want to prepare your own cleaning mixtures or need large quantities, the powder usually yields more for every euro. If you prefer something ready to use without measuring or diluting, the liquid is more convenient for everyday use. Many customers keep both formats at home for each type of task.
Can I mix citric acid with bleach or chlorine?
No, never. Mixing citric acid with bleach, chlorine, or products containing them produces toxic gases that are dangerous to health. Always use citric acid alone or combined only with water.
Is it safe for all surfaces and appliances?
It is safe for most surfaces and appliances resistant to limescale, such as washing machines, dishwashers, coffee makers, and taps. It is not recommended for marble, natural limestone, or surfaces especially sensitive to acids. Always test on an inconspicuous area before applying to a new surface.
How often should appliances be descaled?
It depends on the hardness of the water in your area, but as a general reference, it is recommended to descale the washing machine, dishwasher, and coffee maker every 1-2 months in areas with very hard water, or every 3-4 months in areas with softer water.
Where can I buy citric acid online in Spain?
You can buy Puerto Verde citric acid directly in this collection, with shipping throughout the mainland, or in our official store on Amazon: Buy Citric Acid Powder on Amazon and Buy Liquid Citric Acid on Amazon.
