Natural pool flocculant is a clarifying treatment of plant or mineral origin that groups suspended particles—dust, fine turbidity, dead algae remains—into clumps that settle at the bottom and can be easily vacuumed. Unlike conventional chemical flocculants based on aluminum sulfate, natural flocculants are biodegradable, do not alter pH, and are safe for people with sensitive skin. They are applied in both private pools and natural pools, and ecological filtration systems.

What is natural pool flocculant and how does it work?

Natural flocculant works through a coagulation-flocculation process: its active molecules bind to negatively charged microparticles floating in the water (clay, dust, organic waste) and clump them into heavier "flocs" that fall to the bottom. Once settled, they are vacuumed directly to the drain without passing through the filter.

The most commonly used natural flocculants in pools are based on chitosan (derived from crustaceans), modified corn starch, or vegetable tannins. All of them are free of heavy metals and are compatible with most common purification systems.

When do you need to apply natural flocculant in your pool?

  • Cloudy or milky water that doesn't clear after 48 hours of continuous filtration
  • After a storm that has carried dirt, dust, or sand into the pool
  • After a shock treatment with algaecide to remove suspended dead algae remains
  • When opening the pool each season, especially if the water has been stagnant for months
  • Green or yellowish water due to algae proliferation (after treatment, not before)
  • When the sand filter loses efficiency and cannot clear the water on its own
  • Pools with high occupancy in summer, where sunscreen and sweat contribute to rapid turbidity

How to apply natural flocculant step-by-step

⚠️ Important before starting: Natural flocculant works exclusively with sand or active glass filters. It is not compatible with cartridge filters. If you have a cartridge filter, use a liquid clarifier instead.
  1. Check the pH: It should be between 7.0 and 7.4. Outside this range, the flocculant loses up to 60% effectiveness. Adjust with a pH increaser or decreaser if necessary.
  2. Calculate the dose: Use our dose calculator to find the exact amount based on your pool's volume in m³ (do not overdose, it doesn't increase effectiveness).
  3. Dilute the product: Pour the dose into a bucket with pool water. Mix well before adding it to the pool.
  4. Distribute around the perimeter: With the filtration system on, slowly and evenly pour the mixture around the entire edge of the pool.
  5. Set the filter to recirculation mode: Change the valve from filter to recirculation for 2–4 hours so that the flocculant is distributed without being sucked into the filter.
  6. Let it rest for 8 to 12 hours: Ideally overnight, without swimming. This is when the floc settles at the bottom, forming a uniform layer.
  7. Vacuum the bottom: The next day, carefully vacuum by moving the vacuum head over the entire bottom surface. Set the valve to the "drain / waste" position to expel the floc directly and not recirculate it to the filter.
  8. Final backwash: Perform a complete backwash of the sand filter after vacuuming to remove any residue.
  9. Check the water: Measure pH, chlorine, and alkalinity again. In most cases, there will be no significant variations.
💡 Tip: If the turbidity is very intense (you can't see the bottom of a 1.5 m pool), repeat the treatment after 24 hours following the first complete cycle. The second treatment is usually sufficient to leave the water crystal clear.

Natural flocculant dosage: how much you need according to your pool's volume

The standard dose of natural flocculant is 20 ml per 10 m³ of water for pools with moderate turbidity. For intense turbidity, up to 40 ml per 10 m³ can be used. Always consult the product label you purchased, as concentration may vary between formulas.

Pool volume Maintenance dose Intense turbidity dose
20 m³ (small pool) 40 ml 80 ml
32 m³ (medium pool) 64 ml 128 ml
50 m³ 100 ml 200 ml
64 m³ (large pool) 128 ml 256 ml
80 m³ 160 ml 320 ml

Frequently asked questions about natural flocculant

Is natural flocculant as effective as chemical flocculant?
Yes, in most cases, the effectiveness is comparable or even superior. Chitosan-based natural flocculant shows a high affinity for organic particles (dead algae, sunscreen residues, plant matter), which are precisely the most frequent causes of turbidity in domestic pools. For very intense inorganic turbidity (mud, clay), a second dose may be required, but the final result is crystal clear.
How long does natural flocculant take to work?
Natural flocculant begins to clump particles within the first 2–4 hours after application. The visible deposit at the bottom forms between the following 8 and 12 hours, which is why it is recommended to apply it at night. The next day, the floc can be vacuumed, and the pool should appear noticeably clearer. For the final result, wait 24–48 hours after vacuuming.
Can you swim right after adding natural flocculant?
It is not recommended. For the flocculant to work correctly, the water needs to be still. Swimming during the first 8–12 hours would agitate the water and disperse the forming floc, preventing it from settling properly. Wait until you have vacuumed the bottom and checked the water parameters before resuming pool use.
Does natural flocculant work for saltwater pools?
Yes, natural flocculant is fully compatible with saltwater pools. The presence of chlorides in the water does not interfere with the flocculation mechanism. In fact, saltwater pool owners often prefer natural flocculant precisely to maintain consistency with a system that is more respectful of the skin and the environment.
Can I use natural flocculant in a biopool or natural swimming pool?
Yes, it is the only type of flocculant suitable for biopools. Aluminum sulfate-based flocculants are contraindicated in phytoremediation systems because aluminum inhibits the growth of purifying aquatic plants. Natural biodegradable flocculant does not affect the system's microbiology or plants, making it the recommended option for these types of installations.
What is the difference between flocculant and clarifier?
Although they are used to clarify water, they work differently. Flocculant groups particles into heavy clumps that fall to the bottom to be manually vacuumed; it requires stopping filtration (recirculation mode) and cleaning the bottom afterward. Clarifier also groups particles, but into smaller groups that the filter can retain; it is added with the filter running in normal filtration mode. Flocculant is more powerful for intense turbidity; clarifier is more convenient for regular maintenance and for cartridge filters.
Do I need to adjust the pH before adding natural flocculant?
Yes, and it is the most important step. The optimal pH for flocculation is between 7.0 and 7.4. With pH above 7.6, the effectiveness of the flocculant is significantly reduced because particles acquire a higher negative charge and repel each other, hindering aggregation. A pH below 6.8 can also interfere. Always measure the pH with a kit or test strips before treating.
How often should I use natural flocculant?
Natural flocculant is not a daily product, but an occasional one. It is recommended to use it 1 or 2 times per season: at the beginning (pool opening) and in case of turbidity. For weekly water maintenance, it is more appropriate to use a liquid clarifier dose by dose. If your water frequently becomes cloudy, also check the filter's condition, daily filtration time, and active chlorine levels.
Does natural flocculant affect chlorine levels?
Not directly, but indirectly, it may seem that chlorine increases. By eliminating suspended organic matter (which consumes active chlorine), the treatment reduces the water's "chlorine demand," so the available residual chlorine may increase slightly. This is positive. In no case does natural flocculant generate byproducts that consume or destroy free chlorine.
How many treatments does each product format provide?
It depends on your pool's volume and the chosen format. In our store, you will find natural flocculant in various sizes, each designed for a specific number of treatments (each treatment equals a full dose for a standard pool of approximately 30–35 m³). Use the dose calculator to find out how many treatments you will need in your specific case.
